Stephen Cherry and Steven Warburton waited until near the end of the night to make a big move up the leaderboard on Day 1c of the £1,100 888poker Live Manchester Main Event.

Cherry, who earlier picked up aces over kings twice in the span of an hour, busted Cong Le with a set of jacks in a 10-minute hand as he ended up with 231,000. Warburton, meanwhile, busted Christopher Johnson in a massive pot on the last hand of the night when he flopped a set of nines to crack Johnson’s queens. The British poker superstar, who has more than $2.5 million in live earnings, finished with 266,000 and in second place on the leaderboard.

They’re both looking up at Neville Betty, who ended up as chip leader of the surviving 33 players with 323,500. Andy Calderwood (241,000) and Yuet Wong (202,000) round out the top five. Newly-crowned WSOP bracelet winner Jamie Walden (170,500), poker streamer Gary “GazzyB” Blackwood (82,500), 888poker’s Andrei Cosmin (63,500), Jamie Dwan (62,000), Guillermo Sanchez Otero (57,500), and UFC fighter Terence Etim (45,000) also bagged up at the end of the night.

Players who weren’t as fortunate included Dean Hutchison, Calogero Morreale, Michael Kane, and Michael Allen. Jack McDermott's day couldn't have begun any better as he busted Thomas Clack on the first hand with quads, but he couldn't continue that momentum and busted later in the day.

Day 1c attracted 125 entries, more than the first two starting flights combined, building the field up to 232. Just 57 have booked their tickets for Day 2, with a turbo Day 1d flight still in progress. There are currently 20 players remaining out of 34 entries in that flight with around an hour of play left.

Day 2 begins tomorrow at noon local time. Late registration remains open until the start of play, so there is a chance the field can grow even larger. The action picks up on Level 15 with blinds of 1,500-3,000 and a 3,000 big blind ante. Levels will be extended to 60 minutes beginning on Day 2.

PokerNews will be back tomorrow providing all the live updates as the race for the money and the final table begins.

Singh Survives on a Two-Outer

Level 14 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Gurdeep Singh moved all in for 30,500 from early position and Waldemar Pedzich called in the cutoff.

Gurdeep Singh: AQ All in
Waldemar Pedzich: AA

Singh had run into Pedzich's aces and was at risk of elimination at the end of the day as the flop came Q53, giving him some hope with a pair. The turn was the 5, but Singh caught one of the last two queens with the Q river to earn a miracle double up.

"We're going on the feature table now," tablemate Stephen Cherry said.

Tournament officials announced that players will see four more hands before bagging up for the night.

Cherry Ends the Night With a Bang After Taking Out Le

Cong Le bet 12,000 from early position on a flop of AJ3 and Stephen Cherry called in the cutoff, as did Alec Wong in the small blind.

The turn was the K and Le bet 20,000. Cherry then moved all in and Wong got out of the way.

Le went deep into the tank as he pondered the decision for his last 70,000. Tournament officials announced four more hands will be played at the end of the night, and one of the other tables had already finished up before this table had even begun their last four.

Le took nearly 10 minutes. "I'm not calling the clock," Cherry said. Le eventually called with A9, but Cherry showed him JJ for a set. Le was already drawing dead by the 2 river and was sent to the rail near the end of the night.

Le Doesn't Get His Wish Against Calderwood

Level 14 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Andy Calderwood three-bet to 30,000 in the cutoff and Cong Le called in the hijack.

"No ace, no king, please," Le pleaded with the dealer as he covered his face while the 10102 flop was being dealt. Calderwood then continued for 20,000.

Le spent several minutes in the tank before calling. "No ace, no king," he repeated, but he didn't get his wish this time as the dealer turned over the K. Calderwood then bet 50,000 and Le snap-folded. Calderwood showed him QQ while taking in the pot.
