McClung Finishes On Top After Day 3

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Chris McClung
Chris McClung

Day 3 of the 2011 San Remo is in the books and it was a pretty short day at that. The remaining field of 144 players was cut down to just 64 and they'll be returning for Day 4 on Tuesday. The man leading the charge is Chris McClung with 1.202 million in chips.

With 144 players returning and the money line set at 128, it didn't take long for the bubble to burst. After a few all ins that didn't eliminate anyone, Christian Troger saw his tournament life fade away thanks to the kings of Chris McClung.

On the {10-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop, McClung bet 13,000 before Troger raised to 26,000. McClung reraised to put him all in and Troger called to put his tournament life on the line. Troger held the {A-Spades}{7-Spades} and McClung the {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}. The turn was the {J-Hearts} and river the {8-Hearts}, eliminating Troger from the tournament in 129th place and bursting the bubble.

At the start of the day, Joseph Cheong held the chip lead. He had a wild, up-and-down day just like the day before and wound up finishing on 833,000. In one of more key hands he played today, Cheong sent William Thorson to the rail.

Thorson had bet 43,000 on the {K-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} board and Cheong moved all in. Thorson tanked for a bit and then made the call for his last 200,000 or so. Cheong tabled the {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for a straight and Thorson mucked his hand before heading out the door.

was represented by Vanessa Selbst, Lex Veldhuis, John Duthie and Johnny Lodden on Day 3. All four of those players advanced to Day 4 and are still in contention for the title.

The 2011 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event champion Elio Fox also made it through the day. He finished on 793,000 and continues his very hot month of October.

Some of the notables to bust on Day 3 included Toby Lewis, Taylor Paur, Steve O'Dwyer and Kyle Johnson.

Day 4 will take place tomorrow at 1400 CET (0500 PDT) in San Remo, Italy as the quest continues. Be sure to tune back then.

Shut 'Er Down

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

We've reached 64 players, and we've decided to call it a night. Well, not us personally, but the tournament staff. The bags are coming out right now, and we'll be back to wrap it up in just a minute.

Duthie Shows a Monster

Vojtech Ruzicka opened the pot to 18,000, and Elio Fox three-bet to 44,000. Around in the big blind, John Duthie took his pause to think things over, and he cut the calling chips out from his stack to eye up the potential damage. He only had 252,000 left, and he eventually decided to shove all in for that amount. The two folds came rather quickly in turn, and Duthie took the opportunity to advertise his {J-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} with a big smirk.

Deeb Eliminated

Shaun Deeb - out
Shaun Deeb - out

The last ~25,000 chips are gone, and so is Shaun Deeb. It's his second EPT Main Event cash, but the small payday was not what he was looking for this week in Italy.

River Luck > Flop Luck

Johnny Lodden raised preflop from early position, and Pier Paolo Ruscalla defended his big blind to go heads up to the flop.

It came {10-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {6-Clubs}, and the action followed. Ruscalla led out with 26,000, and Lodden raised to 65,000. After a long pause from Ruscalla, he shoved all in for about 250,000 total, and Lodden, looking frustrated, dropped the calling chips into the put with a shake of his head. It seemed he already had a good idea what Ruscalla was going to turn over.

Showdown
Ruscalla: {A-Diamonds} {6-Hearts}
Lodden: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}

Lodden could only sigh in frustration, and Ruscalla had a hammer lock on the double up. The turn {3-Clubs} was a blank, but lightning struck the river. The black widow, the {Q-Spades} appeared like the Kiss of Death for Ruscalla. Lodden spikes his two-out winner, eliminating Ruscalla to chip his way up to about 655,000.

Deeb Decimated

We only caught the tail end of this pot, walking up to see the showdown from a {2-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {7-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {2-Spades}. We're guessing the money went in preflop, because Shaun Deeb's {K-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} didn't have any piece of that board. Salvatore Salzano had {10-Clubs} {10-Hearts} out in front of him, and his full house earned him the double, knocking Deeb down to about 90,000.

A couple hands later, he dropped another chunk. This time, Frida Broberg shoved her short stack with {K-Hearts} {10-Spades}, and Deeb looked her up with the superior {A-Spades} {Q-Diamonds}. The board ran our sour for Deeb, though, coming {J-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {6-Spades} {4-Hearts} to give Broberg the lucky double. Deeb has just 25,000 chips left now.
