McClung Goes Wire to Wire on a Short Day 4

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Chris McClung
Chris McClung

Day 4 was another short one at the San Remo and it took less than seven hours to shrink the field from 64 players down to 24. Canada's Chris McClung came into the day atop the pack, and his lead only ballooned over the course of the four levels. At the end of the night, he's got an impressive 3,148,000 chips in his bag, and that's good enough to give him more than 150 big blinds and about a million-chip lead over his nearest challenger heading into the penultimate day.

Joseph Cheong was within striking distance to start play, and he enjoyed a good increase over the first few levels. Very late in the day, though, Cheong's chips were absorbed by McClung in a huge crusher of a pot. Before the flop, the chip leader had three-bet to 104,000 behind a Mustapha Kanit raise, and Cheong made a cold four-bet to 220,000 total. That folded Kanit, but McClung went ahead and shoved it all in, about a million effective. The call came instantly, and he snapped over his {K-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}. Not only was he in the lead, but he'd caught McClung with a very weak hand, just {Q-Hearts} {7-Hearts}. The dealer provided the kiss of death for Cheong, though, running out a {J-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {9-Spades} board to seal his demise during the last level of the night.

Joining Cheong on the rail were two of the four Team PokerStars Pros who'd survived until Day 4. Vanessa Selbst was the first to fall, unable to get much going with her middling stack. She ended up shoving with {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} on queen-high board, and Alessio Isaia's {Q-Hearts} {J-Hearts} had turned two pair to usher one of the last remaining ladies out the door. Shortly thereafter, John Duthie -- the founder and creator of the EPT -- was eliminated with {A-Spades} {6-Spades}. He was short when he shoved, and Christopher Williamsson found {A-Hearts} {K-Spades} to tally the knockout on a {8-Clubs} {4-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} board.

That leaves Lex Veldhuis and Johnny Lodden to carry the torch for the Team, and both of them had productive sessions on the felt, and their advance came despite the fact that they were seated next to each other for the bulk of the day. Lodden managed to double with kings against Cheong's ace-king around dinner time, and he bagged up 1,227,000 to end the day. On his left, Veldhuis seemed to be pacing himself against an active table, and after not much chip movement, he finished with 877,000 in his bag.

Other notables still in the mix include Barny Boatman, Kevin MacPhee, Mike McDonald, Alessio Isaia, and the new WSOPE Main Event champion, Elio Fox. They'll return to the Casino di San Remo at 14:00 CET on Wedesday for the playdown day.

Next stop: Final Table.

Drobyna Out in 25th; Time to Bag and Tag

Jon Spinks sent Richard Loth out on 26th and he just sent Denys Drobyna out in 25th with similar action.

Action folded to Spinks on the button and he open-shipped. Drobyna was the only blind in the big blind and made the call with {A-}{6-} for his last 180,000 or so. Spinks held {Q-}{10-}. A queen flopped straight away and that's all Spinks needed to win the hand and eliminate Drobyna in 25th place.

Loth Out

Action folded to Jon Spinks in the small blind and he raised all in to put the short-stacked Richard Loth all in from the big blind. Loth called with the {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and put himself at risk for around 150,000. Spinks held the {9-Spades}{3-Hearts}.

The board ran out {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and Spinks won the hand with two pair. Loth hit the rail in 26th place and there's only one more elimination to go before the end of the night.

Turn Check-Raise from Cedolia

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Gianluca Cedolia raised from under the gun to 45,000 and Yorane Kerignard reraised to 95,000 from the button. Action folded back to Cedolia and he made the call.

The flop came down {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades} and Cedolia check-called a bet of 64,000 to see the {4-Diamonds} pair the board on the turn. Cedolia checked again and Kerignard bet 89,000. Cedolia check-raised to 216,000 with about 240,000 behind. After a minute, Kerignard folded.

Fundaro Falls Down

On the turn of a {8-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {7-Hearts} {4-Clubs} board, we joined the action as Gianluca Cedolia was betting 92,000 in a three-way pot. Yorane Kerignard checked and called, but Giacomo Fundaro check-shoved for 256,000 total. Cedolia folded out of the way, but Kerignard quickly called with his covering stack, and the news was not good for the at-risk player.

Fundaro's {J-Spades} {J-Clubs} had fallen into a big hole against the {8-Diamonds} {4-Spades} of Kerignard, and the river {9-Diamonds} provided no two-out salvation.

Boatman Reels in a Big Pot

Barny Boatman raised to 42,000 to open the pot, and Elio Fox three-bet to 90,000. Action came around to Etienne Archambeaud, and he shoved all in for 140,000. Boatman proceeded to reraise all in, and Fox asked for the count. It was 312,000, and the call came rather quickly to put two players at risk.

Showdown
Boatman: {10-Clubs} {10-Spades}
Fox: {K-Spades} {Q-Hearts}
Archambeaud: {A-Diamonds} {4-Clubs}

The board ran out {8-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {6-Spades} {10-Hearts}, and Boatman seemed pleased. "That'll do," he said in his understated way. He's sent Archambeaud on his way, chipping up to almost 800,000 in the process.
