PokerStars.net European Poker Tour Season 9 Prague Main Event Day 4: Ben Declares Warrington on the Field

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Ben Warrington - Chip Leader
Ben Warrington - Chip Leader

Day 4 of the PokerStars.net European Poker Tour Season 9 Prague Main Event began with 55 players. Less than three levels later, the field had dwindled down to 21, and leading the remaining players is Ben Warrington. He bagged 2.618 million chips, and only one other player, David Boyaciyan, bagged more than two million chips.

The day began with a flurry of bust outs, and there was a massive hand between Jorma Nuutinen, Luca Giovannone, and Jason Helder. Giovannone open-shoved his last 65,000 from under the gun with the blinds at 5,000/10,000/1,000, Helder called in the hijack seat, and Nuutinen three-bet to 122,000 from the cutoff. Helder moved all in for effectively 564,000, and Nuutinen called to put himself at risk.

Giovannone: {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts}
Helder: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Nuutinen: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Nuutinen held as the board ran out {2-Hearts}{q-Spades}{7-Spades}{8-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, eliminating Giovannone and crippling Herm.

Herm bowed out a few hands later when he called a three-bet shove from Radu Catoiu. Herm’s {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} was slightly ahead of Catoui’s {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}, but the board ran out {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{4-Spades}.

Towards the end of the first level of Day 4, Johnny Lodden was the recipient of a rather large gift. Lodden opened to 20,000 from the cutoff seat, Robert Kokoska three-bet to 48,000 on the button, and Lodden made the call. The flop was {6-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}, Lodden checked, and Kokoska continued for 40,000. Lodden min-raised to 80,000, Kokoska moved all in for around 400,000, and Lodden tank-called.

Kokoska: {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Lodden: {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Lodden held as the turn and river came {3-Clubs}, {6-Spades} respectively, rocketing his stack to 1.275 million chips.

Level 21 was certainly kind to Mariusz Klosinski. The Polish gentleman won three key hands, and saw his stack increase from 300,000 to 1.3 million. After crippling Marian Kulifaj with two kings, he had him at risk holding {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. Kulifaj was behind with {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, and didn’t catch up as the board ran out {7-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{a-Spades}{j-Spades}. A few hands later, with the blinds at 6,000/12,000/2,000, Rami Hajiyev open-shoved 175,000 from the cutoff seat. Dominik Paus re-shoved for 441,000 on the button, and Klosinski immediately re-shoved from the small blind. The big blind released, and the hands were opened:

Klosinski: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Paus: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Hajiyev: {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

The board ran out {5-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, and both Hajiyev and Paus were eliminated.

Chris Brammer, who entered Day 4 third in chips, also busted during the second level of play. In the Brit’s final hand he three-bet shoved on the button with {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, and Sergio Aido Espina, the original raiser, snapped him off with {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}. The kings held as the board came {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{10-Clubs}, and Brammer hit the rail.

A few minutes later at an adjacent table, Fabrice Soulier got frisky and five-bet all in with {j-Spades}{9-Spades}. Mark Herm quickly called with {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}, and Soulier snatched the lead when the flop came {5-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{9-Clubs}. The turn ({q-Hearts}) and the river ({8-Hearts}) were both hearts however, and Herm made the nuts. Soulier was out, while Herm’s stack shot up to over 1.4 million chips.

In the following level, we saw the biggest pot of the tournament thus far. With the blinds at 8,000/16,000/2,000, Ben Warrington opened to 35,000 on the button. Lodden three-bet to 68,000 from the small blind, and Warrington made the call. The dealer fanned {4-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, and Lodden led out for 65,000. Warrington raised to 130,000, Lodden re-raised to 215,000, and Warrington clicked it back, re-raising to 360,000. Lodden tank-shoved for 1.18 million effective, and Warrington snapped it off.

Lodden: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Warrington: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

The turn and river came {q-Diamonds}, {9-Spades} respectively, and Warrington vaulted into the chip lead where he never looked back.

After the eliminations of Catoiu and Denis Pisarev, the field was reduced to 24 players. It was decided by the tournament directors during the day to play until 21 players remained rather than 24, so play resumed with Level 23 in order to eliminate three more players.

The 24th-place finisher was Italian Enrico Tau. Tau entered the day with just over six big blinds, and on his final hand he was all in and at risk with {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}. Dutchman David Boyaciyan had him at risk with {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}, and held as the board ran out {8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Spades}.

Manuel Bevand, who made an impressive hero call on Day 3 and flopped the nuts to double on the last hand of Level 22, was the penultimate elimination on Day 4. Bevand six-bet shoved for 700,000 over a five-bet from Boyaciyan, and Boyaciyan snapped it off with {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}. Bevand was trailing with {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}, and was eliminated as the board ran out {k-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}.

The final player eliminated on Day 4 was Australian Nicholas Galtos. Galtos open-shoved his last 198,000 from under the gun with the blinds at 10,000/20,000/3,000, and Sergey Kuzminskiy called in the cutoff.

Galtos: {j-Spades}{8-Spades}
Kuzminskiy: {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

The board came {3-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs}, and Galtos was out.

The final 21 players will return for Day 5 at 12:00 CEST on Friday. Roberto Romanello, who finished the day with 341,000 chips, is looking to become a two-time champion in Prague. Boyaciyan final tabled this event last year, and will be looking to make a return trip.

Join us then for up-to-the-minute updates. Unitl then, good night from the Czech Republic!

Boyaciyan Seeks To Best Last Year's 2nd-Place Finish; Eliminates Bevand

Last year, David Boyaciyan navigated the field of 722 players to finish as runner-up to Martin Finger in this event, and remarkably he's making another deep run in the Main Event.

In a recent hand, Manuel Bevand opened with a raise only to have Boyaciyan three-bet to 88,000 from the small blind. After the big blind got out of the way, Bevand four-bet to 155,000, Boyaciyan five-bet 380,000, and Bevand six-bet shoved for around 700,000. Boyaciyan snap-called and Bevand discovered the bad news.

Showdown
Bevand: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Boyaciyan: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

Bevand was literally left shaking his head and watched helplessly as the board ran out {K-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}. With that, the field is down to 22 players, which means just one more must go before calling it a night.

The Long Shot Comes Through For Gonzalez

After Diego Gomez Gonzalez had raised, Aleh Plauski three-bet to 100,000. Gonzalez made the call and then proceeded to check the {10-Hearts}{A-Spades}{J-Spades} flop. Plauski obliged with another bet of 100,000, and Gonzalez responded by moving all in for around 500,000. Plauski called and the cards were turned on their backs.

Showdown
Plauski: {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Gonzalez: {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Both players had flopped two pair, and according the PokerNews Odds Calculator, there was a 95.45% chance of the pot being split; in fact, the only way it wouldn't be is if it came runner-runner spades.

Interestingly the {2-Spades} turn made that a real possibility, and increased Gonzalez's chances of winning up to 20.45%. Wouldn't you know it, the long shot came though as the {4-Spades} spiked on the river.

Gonzalez let out a shout in celebration, while Plauski sat there in disbelief.

Tau of Busting

Enrico Tau has been eliminated from the EPT Prague Main Event after a mis-timed all-in three-bet against David Boyaciyan.

Boyaciyan opened to 44,000 under the gun and the players folded one-by-one around the Tau in the big blind. Tau checked his hole cards, composed himself and three-bet all-in. Boyaciyan instantly called.

Tau: {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Boyaciyan: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

Neither player improved on the {8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Spades} board, Boyaciyan's ace-king kicker winning him the hand and busting Tau.

Romanello Double Chances Looking Slim

Roberto Romanello is close to busting after running jacks into the kings of Mikhail Petrov.

Mark Herm opened to 45,000 from early position before Petrov three-bet to 87,000 from the cut-off and Romanello four-bet all in from the big blind. Herm folded and Petrov called in a flash.

Romanello: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}
Petrov: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

The board ran {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. The Welshman flopped a flush draw but saw the board brick out.

The very next hand Romanello took the blinds and antes after he shoved from the big blind.

The Joy of Being Suited

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Weaker players are often berated for playing any two suited cards, but having two hole cards of the same suit can sometimes pay dividends — just ask Jorma Nuutinen.

The action folded to Ramzi Jelassi in late position and he opened to 40,000. Nuutinen was next to act and he moved all-in, forcing the other players from the pot. Jelassi asked for an official count and when he was told 143,000, Jelassi called.

Jelassi: {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Nuutinen: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The {J-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} flop improved both player to two pair, but the same two pair and a split pot was on the cards. Or was it? The {9-Diamonds} turn gifted a flush draw to Nuutinen, a flush draw that came in with the arrival of the {6-Diamonds} on the river. Ouch!
