Day 1b Completed

Maximilian Senft Leads as 230 of 389 Advance from Day 1b

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Maximilian Senft

Day 1a of the Season 10 European Poker Tour London Main Event drew 209 runners and saw Dhru Patel finish the night as chip leader of the 105 survivors with 241,000 in chips. On Monday, 389 players took their shot at EPT glory on Day 1b. After eight 75-minute levels of play, 230 players survived with Maximilian Senft and his stack of 223,000 leading the way.

The tournament attracted some of the biggest names in the game, and they wasted little time in mixing things up, including Senft. In Level 1 he get off to a dream start when he opened for 300 from the hijack and the player in the cutoff three-bet to 700. Yann Dion proceeded to four-bet to 1,800 from the button, the blinds folded, and Senft, who was participating in the Skrill Last Longer Competition, pushed back with a five-bet to 4,400. The cutoff got out of the way and Dion opted for a six-bet to 7,100.

Senft thought for well over two minutes before making the call, and the two saw a flop of {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{8-Spades}. After two checks, the {Q-Spades} turned and Senft seized the initiative by leading out for 4,000. Dion made the call, the {8-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, and Senft took his time before whispering, "All in."

Dion hit the tank and stared down his Austrian opponent, who was donning sunglasses and a scarf. After 90 seconds or so of contemplation, Dion made the call and Senft proudly turned over the {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} for a full house. Dion shook his head as if to say, "It figures," and then flashed the {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} before sending them to the muck. Dion was eliminated minutes later.

Others who joined him on the rail as the day progressed were Max Silver, who had just finished runner-up to Vanessa Selbst in the UKIPT High Roller; Martin Finger, who took down the Season 10 European Poker Tour London £50,000 Super High Roller a day earlier for £821,000; British pros James Dempsey and Chris Moorman; the well-respected Raj Vorha; current EPT10 Player of the Year leader and November Niner David Benefield; Robbie Bull, who had just won the UKIPT London the day before; and former EPT champs Kevin MacPhee and Kent Lundmark.

On the same token, Team PokerStars Pros Ivan Demidov, Nacho Barbero, Angel Guillen, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Chris Moneymaker, David Williams, Jason Mercier and Vanessa Selbst all failed to survive the night. The same applies to Full Tilt Poker Tour Ambassadors Jonathan Karamalikis and Andras Nemeth.

While many fell on Day 1b, some managed to thrive including Paul Volpe, who was the recipient of some advantageous doubles throughout the day. The first came in Level 3 (100/200) against the aforementioned Nemeth. With 8,000 or so in the pot and a board reading {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, Volpe had check-raised all in for 17,100 and Nemeth thought long and hard before making the call. Volpe rolled over the {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for a straight, and a frustrated Nemeth sent his cards to the muck unseen.

Volpe’s other double came in the last level of the night (Level 8: 300/600/75) when he fired a 2,000 bet on a {3-Spades}{7-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop. Andrew Lowe made it 4,800, the rest of the field folded, and Volpe called to see the {5-Spades} turn. Volpe checked, Lowe bet 12,000, and Volpe moved all in. Lowe snap-called with the {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for a flopped set, but Volpe showed {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} for the straight. The {6-Hearts} river changed nothing and Volpe went on to finish the night with 96,200.

Others who made it through to Day 2 are Shannon Shorr (88,100), Anton Wigg (88,000), Kyle Julius (86,000), Vanessa Rousso (85,100), Daniel Negreanu (77,800), Dario Minieri (75,600), Marvin Rettenmaier (69,600), Ludovic Lacay (63,800), Andre Akkari (59,300), Barry Greenstein (56,100), Liv Boeree (51,800), Mike McDonald (42,900), Lex Veldhuis (37,200) and Phil Hellmuth (12,600).

The surviving players from both Day 1a and 1b will combined for Day 2 action on Tuesday at Noon local time. Registration is open until the start of play, and we expect a few players to take advantage. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then for all the latest and greatest from the EPT10 London Main Event.

Selbst Sent Off

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Vanessa Selbst
Vanessa Selbst

Four players took a flop if {q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, including Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst and Jason Tompkins. Tompkins checked, as did another player, and Selbst tossed out 5,500. The action folded back to Tompkins, who check-raised to 13,800, and Selbst moved all in for what looked like 30,000 or so. Tompkins quickly called.

Selbst: {8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Tompkins: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

The {q-Clubs} on the turn gave Tompkins trips, and took away Selbst's pair outs, and the {k-Diamonds} on the river ended the Team Pro's tournament altogether.

Tompkins chipped up to over six figures.

Shulman Busts in Epic Fashion

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Room View of EPT London Main Event
Room View of EPT London Main Event

Come closer delicious friends and listen to the crazy tale that is Barry Shulman's exit hand. It was relayed to us by Barny Boatman who admitted he'd never seen anything like it.

Barry Shulman had opened to 1,500 preflop. Anton Wigg had called before Ariel Celestino three-bet in position to 5,200. Shulman now called this and then Wigg back-raised to 12,400 in a four-bet.

Celestino folded but then Shulman decided to call this with only 20,000 behind.

The flop was {2-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs} and Shulman checked. Wigg moved all in only to be snap-called.

Wigg showed {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} but he was drawing virtually dead against Shulman's incredibly unlikely holding of {4-Clubs}{3-Clubs} for a flopped straight.

The {10-Clubs} on the turn gave Wigg a flush draw and the {7-Clubs} river made the Swede the nuts from seemingly nowhere to eliminated the former WSOPE Main Event champion. Wigg was up to 85,000 as a result.

Poker, eh? Bloody hell.

Mizrachi is Full of It

Michael Mizrachi

Seven players took a flop of {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} moments ago, and the action checked to Byron Kaverman on the button. He tossed out 2,125, and the action folded to Michael Mizrachi, who called.

The turn was the {q-Hearts}, bringing a second heart, and the two-time World Series of Poker $50,000 Poker Players Championship winner led out for 3,600. Kaverman contemplated the bet for 30 seconds or so, then called.

The {5-Hearts} completed the board, bringing a possible flush, and Mizrachi led out again - this time for 12,725. Kaverman went deep into the tank, and the two began bantering back and forth. Finally, Kaverman flashed a smile and pushed his cards forward.

"You fold?" Mizrachi asked, grinning.

Kaverman nodded, pushing his cards further into the muck, and Mizrachi showed {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades} for threes full of kings.

A Hard Day's Grafton

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Room View of EPT London Main Event
Room View of EPT London Main Event

It's not been Sam Grafton's day, he can't beat Marcin Wydrowski in a single pot which culminated in the 'talkative' Brit losing a big pot.

Grafton and Wydrowski were both all in with Grafton having his Polish opponent covered by just 700 chips.

The board came {8-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}...with Grafton jokingly saying, "Go back to Poland..." and Wydrowski in more giggles. Then the {10-Clubs} hit and Grafton was stunned.

"As soon as you said, 'Go back to Poland' it was coming," declared Daniel Negreanu.

Grafton's last 625 went in the middle in the next hand but he couldn't win with {9-Spades}{8-Hearts} against {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}. Grafton shook hands with all and wished people luck before departing. The table got a little quieter, certainly.

Selbst the Kingslayer

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

With around 12,000 in the pot and a board reading {3-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{a-Hearts}, Nicolau Villa-Lobos checked to Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst, who tossed out a bet of 4,200. Villa-Lobos made the call and then both players checked the {10-Hearts} river.

Villa-Lobos rolled over the {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, but it was no good as Selbst had turned a pair of aces with the {a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}.
