Guillaume Diaz leads after Day 2

Day 2 of the 2016 PokerStars.com EPT13 Malta Main Event saw 233 players return to the tables of the Casino Portomaso and another eight hopefuls opted to buy in with a fresh stack of 30,000. Along with two no-shows, the field size of 468 entries created a total prize pool of €2,269,800. The top 87 spots were to be paid at least €8,070 for their efforts, whereas the winner will receive a payday of €355,700 this upcoming Saturday.

After six levels of 75 minutes, the money spots were narrowly missed, as 90 players bagged up chips with Guillaume Diaz in the lead. The Frenchman bagged up 583,500. He is followed by Gianfranco Visalli (518,000) and Peter Ockenden (469,500).

Other big stacks and notables include Xixiang Luo (390,000), Guillaume Valle (363,000), Sarah Herzali (362,000) Dmitry Yurasov (358,000), and Elie Saad (302,000) and Eugene Katchalov (284,000). Former EPT champions that made it through include Dominik Panka (365,000), Davidi Kitai (284,500), Frederik Jensen (191,500) and EPT11 Malta winner Jean Montury (85,000) and Roberto Romanello (82,000).

Day 2 started with a setup on the feature table, and William Kassouf endured a deja vu from the 2016 Main Event when he ran with kings into the aces of Brian Altman, Vladimir Troyanovskiy busted with deuces in the same hand as well. [Removed:17] got his short stack in good with ace-queen, but Roberto Romanello's {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} connected with the board to bust the €25,750 Super High Roller champion. Jakub Michalak, who won the €10,300 Single-Day High Roller the previous night, sent his stack over to Guillaume Valle and the Frenchman took the lead into the first break of the day.

Georgios Zisimopoulos lost a flip against Guillaume Diaz and Charlie Carrel also joined the rail in the second level of Day 2. Other casualties included the sole remaining PokerStars Team Pro George Danzer, Koray Aldemir, Paul-Francois Tedeschi, Mikhail Petrov, Russell Thomas and IPT Malta High Roller champion Stefan Jedlicka.

It was all about Diaz in the next two levels, as he knocked out Pasi Sormunen and consequently built his stack to become the first player with half a million in chips. Start-of-the-day chip leader Andras Nemeth was sent to the rail after he first doubled Pawel Brzeski and then sent the remainder of his stack over to Eugene Katchalov. Sarah Herzali knocked out Asker Aloev and Bartolomiej Machon with a set of jacks and also cracked the top five at the end of level 12 with 111 remaining.

In the last two levels, another 21 players ran out of chips. Pierre Calamusa's bluff went horribly wrong, as Dmitry Yurasov snap-called with pocket kings. Gianfranco Visalli made a big call with pocket tens on a seven-high turn to eliminate Simon Amyot, the Canadian had pocket fours for the a smaller pair and the straight draw. Several other notables also missed out on the money as well: Ludovic Geilich, Alexandros Kolonias, Paul Newey, and Fabrice Soulier.

Malta's "poker mama" Jacqueline Cachia was also eliminated late on. Dan Shak had raised, then called the shoves of Daniele Colautti and Cachia with ace-king. Colautti had nines, Cachia queens - a king on the flop seemed to have sealed the double elimination, but Colautti spiked a nine on the river to double. The last five hands of the night then brought three double-ups and 90 players bagged up .

As a result, Day 3 will recommence at 12 p.m. local time pretty much on the direct money bubble with blinds of 2,000-4,000 and a running ante of 500. The PokerNews live reporting team will be back near the tables to provide all the action until a winner is crowned.

Popovic Doubles Against Romanello

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Over on the feature table, Roberto Romanello raised from under the gun and Marko Popovic shoved for his last 27,200 on the button. Romanello called and they had to wait for all other tables to be finished.

Marko Popovic: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}
Roberto Romanello: {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}

The board came {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Popovic doubled, two hands remain

Dietrich Fast Doubles During Hand-For-Hand

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Dietrich Fast
Dietrich Fast

It's always a tense atmosphere in a hand-for-hand situation, and Dietrich Fast's all in was no different. The winner of the €10,300 High Roller earlier this week jammed 19,000 from the button and fellow countryman Louis Cartarius looked him up in the big blind.

It took minutes before the hands on all the other tables were finished, which gave the railbirds and camera's plenty of time to swamp the table. Eventually, the hand went to showdown.

Dietrich Fast: {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Louis Cartarius: {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}

The densely packed crowd gathered to watch the {A-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Spades} flop being dealt.

"You can all go now," laughed Fast.

Fast's remark obviously opened the door for a jinx, and sure enough did the {Q-Hearts} on the turn give Cartarius some straight outs. The river {8-Diamonds} wasn't the ten he was looking for, and Fast doubled up.

Baron Doubles Through Philipps

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

In the first hand, Benjamin Philipps shoved from the cutoff and Alexandru Baron called all in out of the small blind for 19,300. Once all other tables were finished, the cards were tabled.

Alexandru Baron: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Benjamin Philipps: {A-Spades}{J-Hearts}

The board came {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{4-Spades} and Baron doubled.

Five More Hands

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

The clock has been stopped, five more hands will be played in hand-for-hand mode. Will the bubble burst today?

Van Brugge Doubles Through Schlott

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Blind on blind, Felix Schlott and Kees van Brugge got it all in. From the big blind, Van Brugge was at risk with only 26,800 in chips.

He had {A-Spades}{2-Spades} and had to hold against Schlott's {5-Clubs}{Q-Spades}. The {5-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{K-Spades} flop gave Schlott a five but Van Brugge paired his ace.

"Queen me", asked Schlott to the dealer. However, he did not hit on the {7-Hearts} turn and {2-Diamonds} river. Van Brugge doubled up and is still in contention to earn a spot in the money.

Ockenden Keeps Trending Up, Takes From Yurasov

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Dmitry Yurasov opened to 7,000 in early position. Ole Schemion called from the cutoff, Peter Ockenden called on the button and Oliver Price defended his big blind. The flop was {K-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and Yurasov continued with 15,000. Schemion folded, Ockenden called, and Price folded.

On the {2-Clubs} turn, Yurasov showed no sign of slowing down with a bet of 42,000. Within mere seconds, Ockenden committed the calling chips. The {5-Spades} on the river paired the board, and now Yurasov bet 66,000. Ockenden took a quick glance at the bet and rapidly called again.

Dmitry Yurasov: {K-Spades}{Q-Clubs}
Peter Ockenden: {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

Yurasov's top pair was no match for Ockenden's top two pair, and the online phenom had to ship a sizable portion of his stack over to the British expat living in Holland.

Colautti Escapes Elimination; Cachia Busts

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Jackie Cachia
Jackie Cachia

Drama for the Maltese poker mama Jacqueline Cachia, as she narrowly missed out on the money.

Dan Shak raised to 8,500 and Gianfranco Visalli called. Daniele Colautti then moved all in from the cutoff and Cachia also called in for around 35,000 on the button. Shak went over the top and Visalli folded.

Jacqueline Cachia: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Daniele Colautti: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Dan Shak: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

The {K-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop improved Shak and he was about to eliminate two players just before the money. The {3-Hearts} turn was a blank, but the {9-Spades} river provided the two-outer for Colautti, who doubled through Shak for 61,100 and sent Cachia to the rail.
