Mats Karlsson

Day 4 of the 2016 PokerStars.com EPT Malta Main Event is in the books. 30 players returned to Casino Portomaso, only 14 will return on Friday for Day 5. It's Mats Karlsson who tops the leaderboard after winning multiple big pots off German superstar Ole Schemion during the final level of the day. With 2,033,000 in chips, he's in pole position for the €355,700 first prize, which will be handed out on Saturday.

Behind the Swede, Russian's Dmitry Yurasov (1,709,000) and PCA 2014 champion Dominik Panka (1,411,000) from Poland round out the top three. The top five further contains Belarusian Aliaksei Boika (1,1195,000) and Elie Saad (1,089,000) for Lebanon, making it an international affair. Start-of-the-day chipleader Tomas Macnamara sits in eight position with 943,000.

On his way to the chiplead, Karlsson clashed with Ole Schemion on multiple occasions. In his first of several big confrontations with Schemion, Karlsson took down a big pot with ace-king where top two pair was good. After winning some more from the German, the two clashed for a fourth time near the end of the day. Karlsson bet ace-eight on a board that contained a king, a ten and an eight, and got a call from worse to win another pot.

Schemion, who entered the last level as chipleader, barely managed to survive the day. The German juggernaut has his work cut out for him, as he will return with just nine big blinds tomorrow.

The day started with several bust outs in quick succession. Walter Treccarichi was the first to go when he ran pocket tens into Karlsson's pocket queens. Dong Zhao also left the building after a hand with pocket tens, he couldn't crack Martin Nikolov's aces.

Ismael Bojang, Guillaume Valle, and Usman Siddique busted before the end of the first level. Sarah Herzali did survive the first 90 minutes, but was left with only one big blind after losing ace-queen against Frederik Jensen's ace-king.

The last woman standing busted in 25th place just a few minutes into the second level of the day. The last Maltese hope Konrad Abela followed her to the rail shortly after. Chi Zhang ended in 23rd place. He became the third man of the day to bust out of the tournament with pocket tens. Bastian Dohler had ace-queen and flopped a queen to send Zhang to the rail.

Davidi Kitai, one of the three former EPT champions left in the field, was the next one to bust. It was a brutal exit as Louis Cartarius rivered an ace with his ace-ten to beat Kitai's queens. Short stack Brian Altman busted a couple of hands later and Sergey Sergeev followed shortly after.

The action slowed down after that, as Armin Mette and Guillaume Diaz were the only ones to bust in level 21. Meanwhile, PCA 2014 winner Dominik Panka fought himself back in contention for the title. He gained a lot of chips, while he was left with only four big blinds earlier on the day.

Panka became the last former EPT champion left in the field when Frederik Jensen busted in 17th place. The Dane's ace-seven fell short against Xixiang Luo's king-ten. Yury Gulyy had been a short stack since the bubble and saw his adventure come to an end in 16th place. Martin Nikolov was the last to leave the tournament on Day 4 and the fourth one to bust with pocket tens. Peter Ockenden had ace-queen and flopped an ace to send Nikolov to the rail

The fourteen survivors will return tomorrow at 12 p.m. local time to play down until six players. The blinds will be 12,000/24,000 with an ante of 4,000. Follow all the action live on PokerNews.com throughout the day as we reach the final table of the EPT13 Malta Main Event.

Day 4 is done

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Day 4 of the EPT13 Malta Main Event is in the books. 14 players have made their way to Day 5. An extensive recap, seating and chip counts will follow shortly.

Ockenden and Macnamara Chop Biggest Pot So Far

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Tomas Macnamara
Tomas Macnamara

Tomas Macnamara raised to 45,000 from the cutoff. Peter Ockenden three-bet to 143,000 from the small blind. Macnamara spent several minutes in the tank before announcing all in. It was a shove for 974.000 total, and Ockenden called it off after mere seconds.

Tomas Macnamara: {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Peter Ockenden: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}

The camera's swooped in to capture the 2 million chip pot, but the likely chop was already reached after the {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop. Both players quickly took back their stacks to chop up the blinds and antes.

Karlsson Takes From Schemion Again

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Mats Karlsson is really hurting Ole Schemion in this last level. He just won another hand against the German.

It was folded to Karlsson in the small blind and he raised to 55,000. Schemion made the call and the flop was {7-Spades}{4-Clubs}{K-Hearts}.

Karlsson continued for 75,000 and got a call. The {10-Spades} turn was checked through. The {8-Spades} fell on the river. Karlsson bet small, only 80,000 and Schemion called.

The Swede showed {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for third pair, but it was good as Schemion mucked.

Karlsson is in command in the pots against Schemion on this feature table.

Martin Nikolov Eliminated in 15th Place (€25,030)

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Martin Nikolov
Martin Nikolov

After he doubled up Xixiang Luo, Martin Nikolov was left with around 20 big blinds. He just got it all in preflop against Peter Ockenden.

When folded to him, Nikolov moved all in for 411,000. Ockenden asked for a count and then moved all in himself for slightly more.

The rest of the table folded and the cards were opened.

Martin Nikolov: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Peter Ockenden: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}

It was a race and Nikolov saw a dreadful ace on the {5-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop. The turn wasn't of any help with the {J-Hearts} and he needed to hit a ten to survive.

The river was the {9-Diamonds} and Nikolov stood up and shaked hands with Ockenden. "Good luck", he said while leaving the table.

Boika Doubles Through Schemion

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Aliaksei Boika
Aliaksei Boika

After losing again to Mats Karlsson, Ole Schemion just lost a lot more against Aliaksei Boika.

It was folded to the Belarussian and he raised to 45,000 and from the button, Schemion made the call.

The flop was {3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and Boika checked to Schemion. The German bet 56,000 and got called.

The {7-Spades} fell on the turn. This time, Boika check-called a 136,000 bet to see the {j-Spades} complete the board.

Boika checked and Schemion put him all in. Boika quickly called for 357,000 in total.

Schemion opened {10-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for a missed flush draw and Boika tabled {9-Clubs}{9-Spades} for a full house and a big double up.

Schemion, who was chipleader not so long ago, is down to just fourteen big blinds.

Luo Finds An Ace, Doubles Through Nikolov

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Xixiang Luo
Xixiang Luo

Xixiang Luo shoved 349,000 in the small blind and Martin Nikolov immediately called in the big blind.

Xixiang Luo: {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Martin Nikolov: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

With his hands folded like a praying mantis, Luo closed his eyes and awaited his fate.

The flop helped Luo tremendously, as the Chinese found the ace he needed: {A-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Clubs}. His Chinese rail let out an audible cheer, but Luo remained dead silent in his seat as he wasn't there yet.

The {Q-Clubs} turn and {7-Hearts} river kept Luo in front, and he jumped from his seat with pumped fists to cheer with his rail.
