Day 1b Completed
Day 1b of the European Poker Tour Malta Main Event played out today over two floors due to the sheer amount of players that turned up. Day 1a attracted 260 players, but today’s 629 entrants dwarfed that number. Registration remains open until the beginning of Day 2, but the 887 players (so far) have helped amass a prize pool of more than €4.3 million and a first-place prize of around €800,000 should be awarded.
Of those 627 that started, around 375 remain and are led into Day 2 by Max Silver, who amassed a 176,100-chip stack. Other players who will be very happy with their days include: Sam Trickett (134,900), Kyle Henry (131,900), Vladimir Troyanovskiy (89,900), Yury Gulyy (108,800), Sylvain Loosli (112,000), Martin Jacobson (81,200), and Jonathan Little (89,400).
Silver’s day got off to a shaky start after he attempted to push Jussi Nevanlinna off top pair on the river. His twice-pot bet with king high was called and 25% of his stack disappeared just like that. The Brit — who used to work for Full Tilt Poker before turning pro — recovered well and had a stroke of fortune in the last level of the night. He flopped a lower set than Brian Benhamou but turned quads after all the chips had gone in on the flop.
Team PokerStars Pro and Online were out in force today. Some did well, and some not so much. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (19,800), Eugene Katchalov (eliminated), Isaac Haxton (eliminated), Marc-Andre Ladouceur (50,400), George Danzer (59,000), Vanessa Selbst (83,200) , Leo Margets (65,800), Jake Cody (78,000), and Jonathan Duhamel (46,200) all represented the red spade with pride.
Ludovic Geilich, Anatoly Filatov, Mike McDonald, Andrew Chen, Davidi Kitai, Steve O’Dywer, Mustapha Kanit, and Jason Wheeler were amongst a host of big names that will have to search for glory (like these players) in the many side events that are scheduled for the week after busting.
Wheeler had an epic three-day journey to get here and he told his story to PokerNews earlier on.
Tomorrow will, as always in EPT main events, kick off at noon CET and six 75-minute levels are scheduled. The tournament will edge closer to the money, but the bubble will probably burst during Level 16 or 17 on Day 3. Until then, it's goodnight from St Julian, Malta.
The World Poker Tour is headed to Amsterdam, and this is huge news for the Netherlands.
Host Remko Rinkema talks with WPT Europe General Manager Hermance Blum and PokerNews.NL leading man Frank Op de Woerd about the exciting news and what this really means for Holland.

The tournament clock reached its last 13 minutes and was halted. Over on table 17 the dealer drew a 6 and so 6 more hands are to be played.
David "Bakes" Baker, now not needing the "Bakes" in our chip counts list since "ODB" didn't show up here in Malta, was down to just under 20,000 when he opened to 1,500 from early position.
Kitty Kuo, still Kitty because Hui Chen-Kuo doesn't look as sweet, three bet to 3,600 while sipping on a glass of red wine.
Action folded back to Baker who asked "3,600?" and when met with an affirmative nod from the dealer, announced all in. Kuo asked for a count (19,525) and made the call. Kuo showed , Baker had .
Kuo wished her opponent good luck but needed some luck herself after the turn; . No help would come for Kuo with the on the river and Baker doubled.

Oleksandr Gnatenko informed PokerNews after yesterday's Global Poker Masters shenanigans that he would be retiring from tournament poker after the EPT Malta Main Event. He just busted to Heinz Kamutzki in a hand where the German tanked for 10 minutes on the turn. If this was his last tournament he went out on a great hand.
Kamutzki opened to 1,400 from the cutoff before Gnatenko three-bet to 3,100 from the next seat along. Patrick Leonard was in the big blind and called along with Kamutzki.
The flop spread and Gnatenko's 3,700 bet was only called by Kamutzki. The turn came as the and Kamutzki checked to face an all in in bet of 20,575. Ten minutes later, Leonard called the clock on Kamutzki but what happened before then was a joy for the table and the small crowd that gathered as the minutes wore on.
Basically the two talked on-and-off about what Gnatenko could have in that spot and what Kamutzki could call with. Obviously, Gnatenko never revealed his hand but Kamutzki admitted he had a jack, in an attempt to extract vital information.
It was hard to make out exactly what Gnatenko was saying but he had some table mates highly amused. Kamutzki came out with some of the following lines:
"Why all in my friend?"
"Sure you want to go out like that?"
"With the king of hearts I'd already be calling!"
"Even if I'm wrong I can still suck out right?"
After the clock was called he made the call with for top pair and was ahead of the semi-bluffing Gnatenko who opened for second pair and flush draw. The river was the and Gnatenko left tournament poker, maybe.

Ori Miller just found himself in a nice spot holding pocket queens, as he had Paul Tedeschi all in for his tournament life before the flop holding a small pocket pair.
Miller:
Tedeschi:
The board ran out and Tedeschi hit the rail after having flopped a set as well. On the turn the Frenchman had chop outs with a flush draw on the board, but the river brought no such thing.
