Beslan Tops the Field After Day 1a

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

The 2011 is in Prague this week and Day 1a kicked things off earlier today. The first of two starting flights brought out 234 runners, capped off by a very late entry by Bryn Kenney. At the end of the day, around 140 of them remained. Topping them all was Vedzizhev Beslan with 132,200 chips in his bag at the end of play.

Amongst those who came out to play were ' Toni Judet, Pat Pezzin, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Rino Mathis, Theo Jorgensen, Richard Toth, Marcin Horecki, Martin Staszko and Michael Keiner. Of that bunch, Judet and Horecki were eliminated.

Other notables hitting the felt on Day 1a included Steve O'Dwyer, James Akenhead, Mike Watson, Chris Moorman, Eoghan O'Dea and Michael Benvenuti. They've all made it through the first gauntlet of levels and will be back for Day 2 on Wednesday.

The way it looks right now, this event should easily clear 600 runners total. Today's field surpassed the Day 1a field from last year and Day 1b should mirror that. On Tuesday, Day 1b will kick off at noon local time for another eight levels of play.

Three More Hands

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Each table will play three more hands and will then bag and tag for the day.

Horecki and Moorman Mix it Up

First in from the cutoff seat, Marcin Horecki opened to 1,500, and Chris Moorman three-bet to 3,400 next door on the button. When the blinds folded, Horecki reraised to 8,525, and Moorman came right back with a five-bet to 15,000 total in the form of three blue T5,000 chips. Horecki took pause, then shoved in, and Moorman sunk in his chair. He hated the call as he made it, but Horecki hated the call even worse. It was Moorman at risk for 51,950, and the cards were on their backs.

Showdown
Horecki: {9-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}
Moorman: {A-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}

Moorman choked back a big gulp as he saw that he was ahead but not by much. The gulp turned to a big frown when the flop brought {3-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {7-Hearts}, and Moorman made a motion to stand up as the blank {4-Clubs} turned. The river was his life-saver, though, and the {A-Spades} dropped off the deck to lock up his double. Now the frown turned into a big sigh of relief, then a smirk, and the Brit has moved his stack over the century mark.

Horecki, on the other hand, is left with just about 11,000 after going to war with the suited connectors.

Don't Be Mad, Marvin

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

He looks more sad, really. We don't know how it happened, but after nursing a middling stack for most of the day, Marvin Rettenmaier has just been eliminated.

Czech Bounced

Petr Targa is out. Down to his last ~10,000, he made his stand on an open-shove with {6-Spades} {6-Hearts}. The {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts} that Alexander Petersen shoved with was fine for a coin flip, but Frank Stumpf happened to wake up with the crushing {K-Diamonds} {K-Spades} to put Targa in bad shape.

The board ran out {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {5-Spades} {10-Hearts} {2-Spades}, and Targa's sixes send him under. He's out of chips, Petersen is down to about 19,000, while Stumpf nearly triples up to about 67,000.

Bojang Gets Peters Back

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

On the river of a {8-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {6-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {9-Hearts} board, David Peters shoved in with a pot of about 26,000 in the middle. His bet was effectively for the 10,350 chips that his opponent, Ismael Bojang, had left behind. Bojang spent a few minutes in the tank, eventually making the call for his tournament life.

Peters rolled over {A-Spades} {Q-Spades}, and Bojang waited to see it before he exposed his superior {A-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}. Peters just shrugged as he paid off his debt, dropping back down under his starting stack to about 27,000 now.
