On Friday, Day 1a of the Run It Up Reno VIII $600 Main Event attracted 267 players, but after the field was whittled down to 20 percent – it happened with 26:32 remaining in Level 12 – just 53 remained with Patrick Truong and his stack of 471,000 leading the way.

Others to bag big stacks were James Brundige (281,500), Ricky “RatedGTO” Guan (275,500), Johnnie “JohnnieVibes” Moreno (227,500), and Kevin Gerhart (221,000). They were joined by the likes of Dan O’Brian (141,000), Andrew Neeme (117,000), 2003 WSOP champ Chris Moneymaker (109,500), LFG co-host Jamie Kerstetter (107,000), Katie Lindsay (103,500), former champ DJ Fenton (82,000), and WSOP bracelet winner Ryan Laplante (46,500).

Of course, not everyone was so lucky. Among those to fire and fall on 1a were traveling poker dealer Nate Patten, Jesse Fullen, social media star Cat “Catrific” Valdes, Chicago’s Jason Mangold, six-time RIU trophy winner Jimmy Cappucci, Eric “TABLECAPTAINN” Wemlinger, Global Poker Award winner Brad Owen, and Pro Bounty champ Jim Petzing, who was recently featured on the latest episode of PokerNews’ LFG Podcast.

Day 1b of the RIU Reno VIII Main Event will begin at Noon local time on Saturday and the field will play to the same point before stopping. Late registration and re-entries will end at that time.

Bag and Tag

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante

The Day 1a field has reached the 20 percent mark. That means play has stopped and players will bag and tag. Tomorrow's Day 1b flight will end at the same time (26:32 remaining in Level 12).

Gerhart Felts Schoonbaert

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante

After an open from Kevin Gerhart in the cutoff, Ryan Schoonbaert three-bet shoved for 35,000 in the big blind, and Gerhart called.

Gerhart: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}
Schoonbaert: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

Schoonbaert got no help on a {3-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{a-Clubs} board and hit the rail.

Novak Scavenges a Knockout

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante

A short-stacked player moved all in for 20,500 from middle position and action folded around to Corey Novak in the big blind. Novak, who won his way into this tournament by completing the RIU Reno VIII Scavenger Hunt earlier in the week, opted to call and was in a dominating position.

Novak: {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Spades}{6-Diamonds}

Novak had the superior ace and took a commanding lead on the {8-Clubs}{5-Spades}{10-Clubs} flop. The {3-Hearts} turn locked it up for him and he was pushed the pot after the {k-Clubs} was run out on the river.

Kumar's Kings Dent Lagodich

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

Frank Lagodich raised to 4,500 from UTG, and DJ Fenton called from UTG+1. Jasthi Kumar announced a three-bet to 14,500 from the hijack, and action folded back to Lagodich. He four-bet to 28,000, which chased Fenton out, but Kumar five-bet jammed for 59,000. Lagodich quickly called.

Lagodich: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Kumar: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

The {9-Clubs}{10-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop provided little help for Lagodich, but he picked up four more outs when the {j-Spades} turn gave him a Broadway draw. He bricked off on the {8-Clubs} river, however, and Kumar doubled up.

Guan Gets Lucky to Double Through Stapes

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Joe Stapleton
Joe Stapleton

Ricky "RatedGTO" Guan moved all in for 25,000 under the gun and Joe "Stapes" Stapleton isolated with a three-bet jam two spots over in the hijack. The rest of the players folded and the hands were turned up.

Guan: {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Stapleton: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}

Guan had a kicker problem but he got lucky when the {3-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop delivered him two pair. Neither the {7-Diamonds} turn nor {4-Diamonds} river helped Stapes and he sent over nearly half his stack. He went bust a couple hands later.

Lombard Gets Cockey

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Anthony Lombard
Anthony Lombard

Jon Cockey limped in from UTG, and Anthony Lombard raised to 6,000 from the cutoff. Patrick Truong called in the big blind, as did Cockey.

Action checked to Lombard on a {3-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{k-Spades} flop, and he bet 8,000. Only Lombard called.

The {9-Diamonds} fell on the turn, and after a lengthy tank, Cockey jammed for 30,500 and Lombard quickly called.

Cockey: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}
Lombard: {k-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}

Cockey needed a non-diamond ace or jack to survive, but the {10-Diamonds} completed a flush for Lombard instead.
